What should a lesson plan include?
A title and the time it takes, the materials, and objectives that say what students will be able to do. Then the lesson itself: a lead-in that focuses students, teaching with guided practice, independent practice, a summary, and a check for mastery. Wikipedia's entry on lesson plans lists these parts, and adds reflection on what worked afterward.
- Type the title, subject, grade and date.
- Write the objectives as what students will be able to do.
- Fill in each procedure step with minutes, what you do and what students do.
- Add differentiation and how you will assess.
- Download the PDF or Word file.
What does I do, we do, you do mean?
It hands a skill over step by step. First you model it while students watch (I do), then students practice with your help (we do), then they try it alone (you do). Researchers P. David Pearson and Margaret Gallagher described it in 1983 as the gradual release of responsibility. The procedure here starts with those three steps.
How long should each part of a lesson be?
It depends on the lesson and the class, so the template only suggests a split: 5 minutes of warm-up, 10 of teaching, 15 of guided practice, 15 of independent practice and 5 to close, which fills 50 minutes. Change any step's minutes and the total updates, with a note if the plan runs past the lesson time.
Can I make a weekly lesson plan?
Yes. Choose Weekly lesson plan above the page and type each day's objective, activities, assessment and homework into its row, from Monday to Friday. Standards and materials sit above and below the week. Press New in the drafts bar to start next week with the same teacher, subject and grade already filled in.
