Edit PDF files

These tools add things on top of your pages: numbers in the footer, a DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL stamp, Bates numbers for legal files, or form fields people can type into. They keep the original content of each page and add a new layer, all inside your browser.

Can I change the existing text in a PDF?

Not reliably, and these tools do not promise it. A PDF stores text as placed letters, not as paragraphs, so changing a word often breaks the layout. What works well is adding new text, numbers, stamps and fields on top, or covering something with a white box.

What is the difference between page numbers and Bates numbers?

Page numbers restart in each document and usually read "Page 3 of 10". Bates numbers are used in legal work: every page across a whole set of documents gets a unique number with a prefix, such as SMITH000123, so any page can be cited exactly.

Can someone remove my watermark?

A plain watermark is a separate layer that some editors can remove. If that matters, choose the flatten option, which merges the watermark into each page so it cannot be lifted off as easily. Flattening cannot be undone, so keep the original file.

How do fillable forms work?

A fillable PDF has form fields: boxes for text, checkboxes and dropdowns. Create Fillable PDF adds them to any page, and the person you send it to can fill it in with a free PDF reader. It can also suggest fields from answer lines on the page.
