Add Table of Contents to PDF

Insert a contents page at the front of a PDF: every section with its page number, linked so a tap jumps there. The entries come from the PDF's bookmarks, or from its headings when it has none. Your file stays on your device.

How do I add a table of contents to a PDF?

Press Choose a PDF. The tool lists the entries it will use: the PDF's bookmarks, or headings it finds in the text. Change the page title if you like, pick the text size, and tick Keep page 1 first if the PDF has a cover. Press Add contents page and download the PDF with its new clickable contents page.

  1. Press Choose a PDF and check the entries listed.
  2. Set the Title of the contents page and Text size.
  3. Tick Keep page 1 first for a cover page.
  4. Press Add contents page, then Download.

Where do the contents entries come from?

From the bookmarks, the outline many PDFs carry in their side panel, when the file has them. Otherwise the tool reads the text and treats lines set clearly larger than the body as headings, nesting smaller headings under larger ones. To change the entries, edit them in PDF Bookmarks first, save, and then add the contents page here.

Edit or create the entries with PDF Bookmarks.

Are the page numbers right after adding the contents page?

Yes. The numbers count pages as the finished file does: if the contents take one page at the front, a section that started on page 1 is listed as page 2. With Keep page 1 first, the cover stays page 1 and the rest move by the number of contents pages. Print numbers on the pages afterwards.

Print matching numbers on every page with Add Page Numbers.

Each line is a standard PDF link to the top of its page, the kind desktop readers and browser PDF viewers follow. If a reader ignores links, the page numbers still guide the reader. Ticking Also save the entries as bookmarks adds the same list to the reader's side panel, for readers that show bookmarks.

Combining several files into one document first? Use Merge PDF, then add the contents here.

Limits and fixes

  • Scanned PDFs have no text to find headings in; add bookmarks by hand in PDF Bookmarks, or run OCR PDF first.
  • Very long titles are shortened with an ellipsis to fit the line.
  • Locked PDFs need their password removed first with Unlock PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.

No. The contents page is made in your browser.

Can I change the heading?

Yes: type any title in Title of the contents page, such as Table of Contents or Index of Sections.

What font is used?

DejaVu Sans, embedded in the file, so accents and symbols print correctly.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in current browsers on iPhone and Android.
