How do I convert a PDF to EPUB?
Press Choose a PDF. The tool reads the text and shows how many chapters it found. Check the title and author, pick Reflowable text or Fixed layout, and keep Use page 1 as the cover ticked. Press Convert to EPUB, then Download. Open the file in your e-reader app, or send it to your device.
- Press Choose a PDF.
- Check the Title and Author.
- Pick Reflowable text or Fixed layout.
- Press Convert to EPUB, then Download.
Reflowable or fixed layout: which should I pick?
Pick reflowable for books and documents that are mostly text: words wrap to your screen, you can change the font size, and chapters appear in the contents. Pick fixed layout when the look matters, such as picture books, comics, recipes with photos or scanned pages, or when the PDF has no text layer. Fixed pages cannot resize text.
How well does the text come through?
Words come out as stored in the PDF; layout is rebuilt. Headings become chapters, lists stay lists, and bold, italic and links are kept. Tables and images are not carried into reflowable books yet. We converted test files and timed them.
| Test file | Mode | Result | EPUB size | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7-page report with 12 chapter headings | Reflowable | 13 chapters with contents (title page plus 12) | 247 KB | 1.3 s |
| 2-page report with a photo page | Fixed layout | 2 page pictures | 833 KB | 3.4 s |
Can I read the EPUB on a Kindle?
Yes, through Amazon's Send to Kindle, which accepts EPUB files and converts them for your Kindle library. Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books and other EPUB readers open it directly. Fixed-layout books work best on tablets and large screens, because each page keeps its full size.
Limits and fixes
- Tables and images are not carried into reflowable books yet; use fixed layout to keep them.
- Footnotes appear as normal paragraphs where they sit on the page.
- Two-column layouts follow the order the PDF stores text in, usually column by column.
- Scanned PDFs have no text, so the tool switches to fixed layout.
- Locked PDFs need their password removed first with Unlock PDF.
