How do I convert a PDF to HTML?
Press Choose PDF files and pick one or more PDFs. The web page appears as soon as each file is read, and HTML code shows its source; the options update it at once. Press Download .html to save the page, or Copy HTML to paste it into a website editor. Several PDFs download as one ZIP.
- Press Choose PDF files.
- Check the web page, or switch to HTML code, and change the options if needed.
- Press Download .html, or Copy HTML to paste it elsewhere.
What does the HTML keep from the PDF?
The structure. Text larger than the body becomes headings, ranked by size. Lines starting with bullets or numbers become lists. Ruled or aligned columns become tables. Monospace text becomes code, and web links stay clickable. Words split across lines with hyphens are joined again. Exact positions, fonts and colors are not copied, so the page can reflow.
| In the PDF | Expected | In the HTML |
|---|---|---|
| Title and section headings | 1 title, 4 headings | 1 <h1>, 4 <h2> |
| Bulleted list | 3 items | 3 <li> |
| Table (header row, 3 regions, total) | 5 rows | 5 <tr> in 1 <table> |
| Link | 1 web link | 1 working <a> |
| Running header and page numbers | on every page | left out |
Why convert a PDF to HTML instead of linking to the PDF?
A web page is easier to read on a phone than a PDF, because the text reflows to the screen instead of needing zooming and scrolling sideways. Screen readers and search engines also read headings, lists and tables in HTML directly. Editing is easier too: the page opens in any website editor or content system.
Going the other way? HTML to PDF turns a web page into a PDF. For a document to edit in Word, use PDF to Word; for plain notes, PDF to Markdown.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to HTML?
Not directly, because a scanned page is a picture with no text in it. Run the scan through OCR PDF first: it recognizes the words and adds them as a text layer. Then convert that PDF here. The tool warns when a file or some of its pages have no text, so you know when OCR is needed.
Make a scan readable with OCR PDF.
Limits and fixes
- Pictures are not included yet; save them with Extract Images from PDF.
- Complex layouts such as magazines with boxes and side notes come out in reading order, not in their original places.
- Locked PDFs need their password removed first with Unlock PDF.
