How do I convert a PDF to TIFF?
Press Choose a PDF, pick Color, Grayscale or Black and white, choose the resolution, and pick one multi-page TIFF or one file per page. Press Convert to TIFF, then Download. A multi-page TIFF opens in Windows Photos, macOS Preview and document systems that take TIFF, which show its pages one by one.
- Press Choose a PDF.
- Pick Color and Resolution.
- Choose One multi-page TIFF or One TIFF per page.
- Press Convert to TIFF, then Download.
Which resolution and color should I choose?
For fax, choose black and white at 200 dpi, the fine fax mode. For archives and printing, 300 dpi in color or grayscale keeps small print sharp. Lower resolutions make smaller files for screen viewing. This table shows the sizes our tool made from a 2-page report at each setting.
| Setting | TIFF size | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Color, 300 dpi, one multi-page TIFF | 568 KB | 1.9 s |
| Grayscale, 200 dpi | 215 KB | 0.6 s |
| Black and white, 200 dpi (fax) | 81 KB | 0.7 s |
| Color, 150 dpi, one TIFF per page (ZIP) | 244 KB | 0.8 s |

Is TIFF better than JPG or PNG for PDF pages?
TIFF is the format many scanners, archives and fax systems ask for, and it holds many pages in one file, which JPG and PNG cannot. Like PNG, LZW TIFF is lossless. If you only need pictures to share or post, PDF to JPG makes smaller files.
Limits and fixes
- Text becomes part of the picture and can no longer be selected; keep the PDF too.
- CCITT Group 4, used by some fax systems, is not written; black and white uses PackBits, which fax software also reads.
- Very large pages at 300 dpi are drawn at a lower resolution if they would pass the browser's picture size limit.
