What is the difference between XPS and OXPS?
OXPS (OpenXPS) is the standardized version of XPS, published as ECMA-388, and Windows 8 and later save it by default. The two share the same structure with different names for some parts. This tool reads both, including the obfuscated fonts that XPS files embed.
Why can't I open my XPS file anymore?
Since Windows 10 version 1803, the XPS Viewer is an optional feature, so new computers often do not have it and XPS files open with nothing. You can add it in Settings under optional features, but converting to PDF solves it for good: PDF opens in every browser and on phones, Macs and Linux.
Limits and fixes
- Gradients are drawn as a single color, and visual brush patterns are left out.
- JPEG XR pictures (.wdp) cannot be read by browsers and are left out.
- Text stored only as glyph numbers (some complex scripts) is left out.
