What is a JFIF file?
JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format, the file layout for JPEG pictures, published in 1992. A .jfif file is therefore an ordinary JPEG picture, only with a less common file ending. Some programs and upload forms do not recognize the ending, even though they would accept the same picture named .jpg.
The Library of Congress describes the format in its JFIF format page, listed below.
Why does my computer save pictures as JFIF?
On some Windows computers, the system settings list .jfif as the file ending for JPEG pictures, and browsers that ask Windows which ending to use save pictures from websites as .jfif. Mozilla changed Firefox to use .jpg in that case, according to its bug tracker. The pictures themselves are normal JPEGs and open like any photo.
Renaming a .jfif file to .jpg also works, because the data is the same. For several pictures in one document, convert them here; for more on picture formats, see PDF vs JPG.
Does converting JFIF to PDF lose quality?
No. The picture data is copied into the PDF as it is, without compressing it again, unless you set a file size limit. In our build test, a 4.1 MB photo of 12 megapixels made a 4.1 MB PDF: the same picture plus a little PDF structure. Set a limit if an upload form caps the size.
Need a smaller file later? Use Compress PDF.
Limits and fixes
- Very large batches of big photos can run out of memory on phones; split them into several PDFs and join them with Merge PDF.
- Camera details inside the pictures, such as location, are left out of the PDF.
