What is an EML file?
An EML file is one email saved in the standard internet message format (RFC 5322), the same format mail servers send. It holds the headers, the text and HTML versions of the message and every attachment, encoded as text. Outlook saves emails as .msg instead, its own format, which this tool also reads.
For Outlook emails, MSG to PDF explains how to save and convert them.
Are pictures and attachments kept?
Pictures sent inside the email are shown in place. Pictures that load from a website when you open an email (often used to track opening) are left out on purpose. Attached PDFs are added page by page, PNG and JPG pictures each get a page, and all other attachments are listed by name and size at the end.
Limits and fixes
- Pictures from the internet are not loaded; the space they would take is left out.
- Word, Excel and other attachments are listed but not converted; convert them with Word to PDF or Excel to PDF and use Merge PDF.
- Encrypted or signed emails (S/MIME) cannot be read without the key.
- Mailbox files (.mbox, .pst) hold many emails; save the email you need as .eml first.
- Chinese, Japanese and Korean text is drawn with Noto Sans SC and KR. Japanese kanji use the Chinese letterforms, which differ slightly for some characters.
